Joelle Coade

Executive Director @ Active Centre of English Training (ACET) | Ireland

How did you start out?

It is a family-run business, set up by my mother Odile in 1975. I worked every summer, every mid-term, every holiday break for as long as I can remember!!

What piece of advice would you give to your 21-year-old self?

To be more confident.

What helped you get as far as you have?

Keep learning. Attend workshops, courses, meetings. Accept new challenges and learn from them.

A low point in your career/life and how you overcame it?

In 2009, when bookings stopped coming in. We were 30 to 35% down in the number of students. We began reducing expenses and organising new courses.

A word to describe yourself

Conscientious.

What are you most proud of in your professional life?

Bringing the team together both academically and in administration. At the end of the day, you can be a hard worker and have a great product / service. However, without a good team supporting you, it does not always work out.

Your first paying job: What and when?

A retail shop in Cork city centre as a part time job during my teens.

What do you do to keep yourself centered?

Visualise what I want, stay calm in hectic situations. Thoughts have power. Have positive thoughts. Everything will work out.

What´s your favourite quote?

Greatness is not where we stand but in what direction we are moving by Oliver Wendell Holmes.

What would your superpower be?

To be able to be everywhere all at the same time. ….
